影视简介We follow the evolution of Carissa, twenty three years old, in a rural village in the Cederberg mountains. She is stubborn, difficult and constantly between jobs. She is in an uneasy relationship with her grandmother Flora, who makes ornate pottery for wealthy clients, and her father Soli, who is a shoemaker and the village drunk. Flora is adamant that she go to a college in Cape Town so that she can leave the village and become a ‘success’. Carissa is going along with the idea, even though she has no idea what she wants to be. There is a new and foreign force lurking in the peaceful town: a construction company intent on building a luxury golf estate in the mountains. The villagers welcome this exciting new development promising wealth and prospects, and Flora, part of the village committee, is particularly enthusiastic. Carissa is discouraged from digging around in the past, particularly questions around her deceased mother. Days before she is meant to go to trade school, she is kept busy by Flora who asks her to get rid of the noisy pigeons in the attic. Carissa finds among piles of junk and discarded memories a small metallic machine. Switching it on, a voice speaks out in a strange language through noise and static. She is alarmed by the ghostly and incomprehensible voice, but doesn’t mention it to anyone. Her grandfather Huri, a rooibos tea harvester and Khoekhoe chief, returns to the town after fifteen years of absence, having been ostracised by the community for starting a fire that went out of control. He is pressured to sign over his rooibos fields to the construction company and has come to sign the papers. Hoping to reconnect with his granddaughter, Huri is able to convince a reluctant Carissa to go harvesting with him for the very last time. Flora is worried that she might be misled by his talk of heritage, but cannot protest. Allowed out in the mountains for the first time, Huri teaches Carissa an appreciation for all that is eternal, sacred and imminently magical in the smallest things, in the stirrings of plants and in the turning of celestial spheres. Reluctant at first, Carissa has her first glimpses of the depths and beauty of Khoekhoe traditions that have survived to this day. Listening to the old forgotten language that he sometimes speaks in, her curiosity about her identity and the village’s past is piqued. Could there be a connection between this language and that spoken by the strange machine in her attic? And once she discovers the sacred value of the land, will she be able to make way for progress and development?影视简介
